The good news is that because the selection of cat jewelry you will find online is so extensive that you are sure to find the right piece of jewelry to please almost every taste. In addition, you can find pieces that fit most budgets.

Gift Basket Series - Tips

Here are some ideas to help you enliven your gift baskets:

Nothing says "party time" more loudly than a bright burst of color. Use bright-colored, festive cellophane paper to add punch to your basket.
Use cool containers instead of the traditional basket. I had touched on this idea before, but here are some additional suggestions: Use a casserole pan, a fruit bowl, or a pretty large tote bag.
Make your very own gift tag. You can decorate it with glitter, stickers or your can use watercolors to make a pretty design.
To decorate your basket, use paper flowers instead of the traditional bow.

I hope these ideas help you to make a truly unique cat gift basket for that special cat loving friend.

Gift Basket Series - Wrap it Up!

Okay, you've filled your cat gift basket with lots of great stuff. What's next? It's time to decorate and/or wrap up your creation.

If you want to decorate your container, you can add ribbons and/or attach flowers or other decorations. If you rather go the traditional route, you will want to cover your gift basket with see-through (cellophane) paper and finish it up with a nice bow.

If you decided to pick a non-traditional recipient, such as a cardboard box or hat box, you can wrap the container before hand with a cat-themed gift wrapping paper.

Cat Gift Basket Series: The Goodies

Hello fellow cat lovers...

So we've reached one of my favorite parts of creating a cat gift basket: The goodies. So you've determined:

Who the lucky recipient will be
What occasion you want to celebrate or what theme to focus on
The type of container you want to use

Now we have to decide what items to put into our gift basket. This decision will be based on the occasion and/or the theme we originally chose.

For example, if the gift basket is to be a Christmas present you will want to add Christmas ornaments or any other objects or goodies that celebrate the season.

If you picked a theme, then you can also add items related to that theme. For example, if your friend loves cats and reading and you've decided to design your basket around books, you can add a book about cat poetry or a book about cat care.

If the gift basket is for a four-legged recipient, you may include a couple of cat toys.

Regardless of theme or occasion, you will want to add cookies, crackers, gourmet cheeses, and fruit. If the gift is for a cat, include cat treats and catnip.

Cat Gift Basket Series: The Container

I'm sorry for the big delay in adding the next installment of the Cat Basket Series. I've been pretty busy lately and my blog clearly suffered for it.

Going back to our cat gift basket design. After you've chosen a theme or determined the occasion you'll be celebrating, you have to select a container.

Of course, the obvious container is a basket. And that's cool. You can even make it more interesting by choosing a unique basket. For instance, you can use a metal basket instead of a traditional wicker basket. You can also paint your basket in bright colors.

If you want to create a truly unique gift, then choose a different container. Here are some ideas:

Bucket
Cardboard box (you can cover it with a nice fabric)
Small wooden crate
Hatbox

The good news is that you can find these containers in different sizes so you can pick the one that is right for your needs.

Gift Basket Series: The Theme

Okay, now that you've decided who the recipient will be, you are in a better position to determine a theme for your basket. (If you don't want to have a theme, that's fine too).

First, ask yourself what the occasion is. Is it for a birthday? Christmas? Valentine's Day? There are lots of goodies celebrating different occasions and you can easily find them online, so you will have little trouble finding items to decorate and fill your basket.

In addition to celebrating an occasion, you can choose a theme based on other factors. For example, if your friend enjoys reading, you can design your cat gift basket around that theme. You can find a wide selection of cat books, manuals, and even magazines.

If the basket is for a furry friend, you can pick catnip as a theme and may include catnip treats, catnip seeds, catnip toys, etc.

It seems obvious and simple enough, but deciding who the gift basket is for will help you determine what type of gift basket you will design. For example, you can create a gift basket for your human friend or you can design a basket for one of your furry friends. So before you begin, ask yourself, Who's the basket for? and, What are the recipient's personal preferences? Determining this will help you design a more personalized gift basket.

Gifts for a New Cat Parent

So you or your friend are thinking about adopting a new cat (or maybe you just adopted one). What are the necessary items you'll need to welcome your cat home? Here's a list of cat essentials you will need:

Food and water:

Food, of course. Make sure you feed your cat a balanced diet. Consult your vet if you need specific information.
Food and water bowls. You will find a wide array of bowls: From simple and inexpensive bowls to high-end automatic feeders. Select one that meets your cat needs and fits your budget.
Treats! (And catnip, of course)

Furniture and carriers:

Cats need furniture? Well, they can always use yours to play and sleep. In addition, it's always a good idea to get your cat a scratching post. It will help your cat keep her nails trimmed and will help save your own furniture. You will also need a carrier to transport your cat. So you will need:

Cat bed, cat condo, or cat mat
Scratching posts
Cat carrier

Grooming

You will need some articles to keep kitty in top shape, including:

Bushes and combs
Tothbrush
Towel, shampoo, and wipes
Nail clippers

Absolutely necessary:

Litterbox or litterpan
Cat litter
Liners
Scoop
Filters

For fun

There are tons of cat toys to choose from, so you will have no trouble finding the perfect toy for your cat. And remember to play with your cat.

Toys
Playground, cat tree, or tower

And don't forget:

Cat collars and tags.

These items make great practical gifts. You can give them separately or better yet, design a gift basket and include as many of these items as you can. A great idea is to also include a cat care manual.

Okay, if you've decided to make your own cat gift basket, take the following factors into consideration:

Choose an attractive container. This could be the traditional basket or something out-of-the-ordinary, like a hatbox or crate.
Goodies. You may design a basket just for your cat loving friend or his/her furry friend. Better yet, make one with goodies for both. Some ideas for your human friend include: gourmet crackers and cheese, cat-themed items such as picture frame, a cat book, or art print. And for kitty don't forget cat treats, catnip, and a couple of toys.
What's the occasion? Since we're focusing on Valentine's Day, include a nice article to celebrate the occasion. What about chocolates for the cat lover and a hear-shaped catnip bag for the cat?
Wrap it. Traditional baskets come wrapped up with clear paper. But this is optional, especially if you are not going the traditional route.

Valentine Gifts for Cats

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and many cat lovers celebrate the date with their pets. I for one will be giving a small token of my affection to my two kitties. Excessive, some non-cat lovers I know said, but to me my furry babies deserve that and more. After all, they give me so much love.

And remember, it doesn't have to be an expensive gift. Some gifts are priceless. Over the next few days I'll be sharing with you some Valentine gifts ideas and some cool resources. Maybe you find something unique that will dazzle your cat or kitten.

Max Update

Max is sticking to his new diet (premium, high-quality, adult cat) and it's paying off. My poor baby does have a hard time with the smaller portions, but he's hanging in there. He looks much slimmer and handsomer now.

We've also been giving him pumpkin and plain yogurt (Activia), which has also helped. I'm positive that constipation will be a thing of the past for my furry baby.

Max has been suffering from constipation for the last several months. We've tried quite a few things, including putting him on a diet, switching him to senior cat food (yes, it was kind of hard for me to admit that my baby is no longer a spring chicken) and adding fiber to his diet. His condition didn't improve much, so the vet prescribed Iams Low Residue formula. But this formula is sold with prescription only and it has been quite hard to find it at regular pet stores. Besides, I've read mixed reviews about it.

So I wanted to try some alternatives so I asked some great cat lovers at a cat forum what else I could do. One of the suggestions was to give him canned pumpkin. I actually bought the raw pumpkin and cooked it. I thought he might not like it. But guess what, he loved it! So I'll give him pumpkin a few times a week and see how he responds.

By the way, that's Max in the picture. He was much younger back then. But he's still looks just as dashing and handsome.

Cats were held in high regard in Ancient Egypt. Felines were not only beloved pets, but they were also thought of as representatives of Bastet, the Egyptian cat goddess of protection. Yes, they were worshiped as deities! (My cats behave as if they are deities, but I guess that all self-respecting cats do that). Cats show up on artwork and everyday items of Ancient Egypt.

Mia Update

Mia is finally recovering from radiotherapy treatment she had back in April and May. It's been three long months. She's always been a fighter, but this was her second round with a major illness, and it didn't look good. No wonder they say that cats have nine lives. Mia has lived through a couple of them already. And she always manages to land on her feet.

So now she's recovering her strength, her wit, her joy for life. Still, most of the time she sleeps. Just like a true cat. And she loves to cuddle up on my lap as I watch TV.

One thing she never lost throughout this ordeal was her appetite. Even after each treatment she would be ready for her favorite food.

Naming a cat can be fun, and somewhat daunting (don't laugh). Yes, you can pick any name - but such method might not produced the best name for your cat. If you don't have problem with that, that's OK. But if you want a truly inspired name for your kitty, then choose carefully.

So how do you go about naming a cat? Here are some pointers:

-- Consider his or her appearance. This will help you narrow the search. You can consider color, unique markings, specific physical traits, etc.

-- Also take into account your cat's personality. This will give you lots of inspiration for sure.

-- The name you choose must be easy to pronounce for you and those who will interact with your cat.

Another Max Update

Max is doing much better now. He's still on a diet but he's going to the litter box more regularly. We do have to add water to his canned food because he'll drink very little water during the day. Overall, he's more active and healthier. I'm so glad.

I must say that it's been quite difficult to keep Max on a diet. Mia, Max's sister, is on a totally different diet since she's recovering from radiotherapy. She has a voracious appetite too! But we're managing.

Max continued having constipation problems, so my sister took him to the vet. It was really bad. So bad that he had to stay over at the clinic for 3 days! His test results were pretty good, he's in good health. And the diet has worked: he's lost a lot of weight. He's lost so much weight that the doctor thought he might have a condition so he did some blood tests. But the results showed he's a healthy kitty.

To help prevent another bout of constipation, the doctor advised us to add water to his food. Apparently that's one of his problems. He drinks very little water. The doctor also recommended to add fiber to his diet. And of course, avoid overfeeding him.

Still struggling with feeding schedule

Putting a cat on a diet is no easy feat. Especially when her sister is on a special diet too (she needs to eat more because is recovering from a very intensive treatment). Sometimes I have to close the kitchen door and leave Max outside while I feed Mia. But he can open doors! So it can get really ugly.

I've noticed that Max will get really hungry when he gets stressed. Just like people. So we try to play with him more and try to get him to be more active. I give him massages too. That seems to soothe him and puts him in a better mood too.

After a couple of days of strict dieting, Max is doing well (regarding his constipation). He is not too happy about his new diet though. We also try to play with him more so that he gets more exercise. He's never been an active cat so we really have had to encourage him to be more active.

So, so far so good. However, having two cats with very different dietary needs is a bit tricky when it comes to placing one of them on a diet.

Cats and Constipation

Okay, today I will not talk about cat gifts. Max (one of my cats) has been suffering from constipation. Last year we had to take him to the vet on a emergency. He had to stay over and was given laxatives. It was not pretty. The doctor told us that he was a bit overweight and he had to lose weight. He said that overweight cats are more prone to developing constipation.

So we followed his instructions and put Max on a strict diet. However, these past few days he's been quick to eat his sister's leftovers and has gained some weight, which has caused constipation problems for him again. Needless to say, he's back on a diet.

So if your cat is suffering from constipation see if he or she is overweight. If you think this may be the case, consult with your vet to determine what's the best diet for your cat. Hairballs and a lack of fiber in your cat's diet can also contribute to constipation problems.

Okay, if you're artistic and really like doing creative projects, make your own, one-of-a-kind cat inspired art. For example, you can make a collage using photographs of your cat (or if the gift is for somebody else use your friend's pictures). Digital cameras and Photoshop have made this type of project fairly easy to do. Furthermore, you can use your artistic creations to personalize other gifts, like calendars, coffee mugs and t-shirts - among many others.

Again, if you are creative (and brave), you could also make your own paintings, drawings, and even portraits using your cat (or your friends' cats) for inspiration.

I love reading about cats so I'm always on the lookout for news and books about cats. And I especially love reading about cat myths and legends. Just the past few days I've been reading about cats in ancient Egypt, their influence in art (not only in ancient Egypt but throughout history) and cat myths. I wrote a page on Bastet, the cat goddess, based on my findings. I knew about this feline goddess but I didn't know that she was so beloved in ancient Egypt. I too learned about Sekhmet, Bastet's counterpart goddess who was depicted as a woman with a lioness head.

Okay, I was trying to see if I could come up with more inexpensive cat lover gifts, especially cat kitchen accessories. So I was doing a bit of research to see if there were any quality (and low-priced) cat-themed kitchen items.

Some of my favorite kitchen items include a cat-themed teapot, coasters, and of course decorative cat platters and dishes. And, most of these items are budget-friendly. They also carry garden accessories and collectibles.

Cat cruelty case

I get so upset when I read about animal cruelty. In this case, somebody left a cat inside a tied trash bag in a dumpster, apparently this person or persons left the cat there to die. Thankfully, a passerby noticed the bag moving and found the cat. The cat is recovering from this ordeal and was given a new name: Luna (Moon)

The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward for information on case.
